The Space Between
Works exploring dualities, relationality, and the unseen.
These works examine how perception is shaped by the filters we carry—linguistic, cultural, personal. By becoming aware of these filters, we can consciously remove or swap them, shifting the way we see what’s in front of us. When the filter dissolves, so does the sense of separation. What emerges is a movement toward unity, a merging into a single human concept.
In Plain Sight
Live reading & bilingual handmade book (Social Practice Art) / Performed in collaboration with Dillon Porter / November 19, 2024 / Masters of Disguise, presented by Baja Sur Writers & Poets League / La Morena, Todos Santos, BCS, Mexico
A performative writing experiment exposing the distance—and intimacy—created through shifting pronouns.
In Plain Sight explores the writer’s impulse to veil personal experience by transferring it onto the third person. In a live bilingual performance, five iterations of the same text are read aloud—each one shifting the pronoun from I to you to he/she. With each shift, the meaning evolves. So does the speaker’s relationship to the content, and the listener’s emotional perception of it.
As the female voice moves through the masculine pronoun—read in performance by Dillon Porter—tone, tension, and accountability subtly transform. The vocal interpretation was intentionally shaped to reflect these shifts, underscoring how language structures not only identity but emotional proximity.
A bilingual handmade book accompanied the performance, inviting the audience to take the work home and engage with it on their own terms. The piece invites reflection: How does language protect or reveal us? What happens when we move through the voice of “the other”?
In writing, there may be attempts to hide—but ultimately, the writing always finds the self.
Between the Lines
Guided writing exchange (Social Practice Art, Participatory Art, Relational Aesthetics) / Facilitated by Amanda Aileen Fisher with Dillon Porter (co-facilitator) / Panteón 19 (June 18, 2024) & Cien Palmas (Dec 21, 2024; Feb 15, 2025; Apr 26, 2025) / Todos Santos, BCS, Mexico
A participatory writing exchange exploring the masculine/feminine mirror through structured reflection, active listening, and guided feedback. Developed as part of Abre Tu Boca, this work applies the writing, active listening, and feedback method I created to facilitate deep self-inquiry and dialogue, using writing as both medium and mirror.
The experience begins in separate writing circles—one for men, one for women—each responding to the same prompt or a deliberate variation. After initial reflection and sharing within these groups, the circles merge. In this space of intersection, the dynamic shifts: voices rise to meet one another, listening deepens, and language becomes a bridge between interior and exterior worlds.
Through this structured yet fluid exchange, something subtle yet profound occurs: perspectives stretch, tensions soften, new understandings take shape. Between the Lines is not just a writing practice but a relational experiment—one that makes visible the unspoken spaces between us.
La Otra Lengua
Live exchange, social intervention (social practice art) / August 20, 2022 — September 20, 2022 / The Factory, Todos Santos, Baja California Sur, Mexico
A social intervention dismantling the concept of “the other” through real interactions
This series of language and cultural exchange gatherings, first developed in Season 1 of Abre Tu Boca, challenges the barriers that separate us—not just linguistically, but socially and psychologically.
Guiding Principles:
1. Language as Connection – Participants gain confidence in “the other language” by practicing in a safe, welcoming space.
2. Bridging the Divide – Forming meaningful connections with people we long to know but may hesitate to approach due to language barriers.
3. Dismantling ‘The Other’ – Shifting the perception of difference by engaging in real conversations.
More than an exercise in language, La Otra Lengua is an act of seeing—and being seen.
